Inezgane: the great souk and local life of Greater Agadir.

About ten kilometres south of Agadir, Inezgane is the great market of the Souss and the hub from which taxis leave for the whole of southern Morocco. No tourist bazaar here: this is everyday life, on a grand scale.

Inezgane is the capital of the Inezgane-Aït Melloul prefecture, south of Agadir, in the Souss valley. The town had 137,512 inhabitants at the 2024 census. For many families in the region, this is where they do their shopping, catch a taxi heading south and come to find what they can’t get anywhere else.

A crossroads for the whole south

Inezgane sits at the junction of the main roads of southern Morocco. Its bus station and huge grand taxi rank serve the whole Souss and well beyond: this is where most shared taxis to the towns of the south depart.

The souks of Inezgane

Inezgane doesn’t have one souk, but several. The best known is Souk Tleta, “Tuesday”: Tuesday is still the traditional market day, even though trading now goes on every day. Next to it, Souk Al Houria and specialist markets share out fruit and vegetables, electronics and scrap metal. A local saying sums it up: every market is in the middle of a town, except Inezgane, which is in the middle of its markets.

People come for the spices, the fruit and vegetables, and the silver jewellery that made the souk’s reputation. Souvenirs and tourist crafts are rare: this is an everyday market, and that is exactly what makes it interesting.

The wholesale markets

Inezgane is also home to the region’s large wholesale fruit and vegetable market, which supplies other towns in Morocco. In October 2019, a wholesale fish market opened next to it, able to handle up to 150 tonnes of fish a day. These are places for professionals, very early in the morning, but they show how much weight Inezgane carries in the Souss economy.

Aït Melloul, its neighbour

Just to the south-east, on the other side of the Oued Souss, Aït Melloul is the most populous town in the prefecture, with 210,870 inhabitants in 2024. Agadir Al Massira airport lies on its outskirts: on arrival, many travellers pass through Inezgane without realising it.

Our tips for your visit

  • Come in the morning, when it is cool and the stalls are full.
  • Bring cash in dirhams: most traders don’t accept cards.
  • On Fridays, some stalls close around midday for prayers, for two to three hours.
  • Haggle with a smile, it is the custom, and keep your belongings close to you in the crowd.
  • Come by car rather than by bus if you have children: our Sandero is hired with no security deposit.
