The guide · Authentic Agadir

The Tikiouine souk, the Thursday market in our neighbourhood.

Two minutes from our apartments, Tikiouine’s Souk El Khemis draws people from all over Agadir every Thursday. Fruit, vegetables, butchers, bric-a-brac: a real neighbourhood market, with no stage set for tourists.

Tikiouine is a large residential district of the municipality of Agadir, south-east of the city centre. Hay Adrar, where our apartments are, lies within this district. Its Souk El Khemis, “Thursday” in Arabic, is one of the oldest and best-known markets in the city.

A Thursday market

As its name suggests, the souk runs to the rhythm of Thursday: on that day, traders and shoppers come from all over the urban area, and even from further afield. Some of the shops, such as the butchers, stay open all week, but Thursday is the day to come and see the market in full swing.

What you’ll find there

Fruit and vegetables dominate, with more than 500 stallholders. There is also a butchers’ section, bedding, household goods and a whole range of small trades that change with the seasons. For a family renting an apartment, it is the ideal place to fill the fridge with fresh produce, cook at the apartment and experience Agadir like a local.

A market undergoing change

The souk is no showcase. In 2026, the local press reported traders’ complaints about its condition: muddy alleys in wet weather and poor lighting in the evening. A redevelopment is planned under Agadir’s urban development programme, and in July 2026 the municipality began reorganising the fruit and vegetable pitches. The layout may therefore change: check before you go, and we will gladly tell you how things stand.

Our tips for going

  • Come on a Thursday morning: the stalls are full and it is still cool.
  • Wear closed shoes, especially after rain.
  • Bring cash and a large bag, or a basket.
  • Avoid driving at rush hour: the streets around the souk are often jammed. From Hay Adrar, a petit taxi will do.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings in the crowd, as in any big market.

And for the rest of your shopping

For everyday shopping, a pharmacy, a convenience store and snack bars are close to the residence, and the Carrefour at the Sela Park shopping centre is about three minutes away by car: see our page on Hay Adrar. For other markets, carry on to the great souk of Inezgane or Souk El Had and Taroudant.
